be part of the return

We have the chance to bring bison back to Kentucky but first we need to prepare the ground.

This isn’t just about restoring animals to a landscape. It’s about restoring relationship. For Indigenous people, whose ancestors lived, hunted, and held ceremony here, the return of the bison carries deep cultural and spiritual meaning. This will be a place where they can come see the land, see the herd, and reconnect with cultural practices related to their care.

And it will be a place of welcome for others, too. A space to learn, witness, and be in relationship with land, history, and care.

A Pathway to Right Relationship

Our work is sustainably funded through a voluntary land tax system, which creates a meaningful pathway for residents of Appalachia to support Indigenous justice.

The land tax invites individuals, particularly those from settler backgrounds, to contribute regular, personalized payments that align with their means. By participating in this voluntary land tax, you actively acknowledge the truth that all of Appalachia is Indigenous territory and move that recognition into concrete action.

This approach creates a tangible way to participate in reparative justice - moving beyond words of acknowledgement to establish a new relationship with the land and with Indigenous communities. It brings you into right relationship.

Through these regular contributions, you not only support this work but also help write a new chapter in your personal and regional legacy, one that embraces responsibility and restoration.

The land tax is more than a donation—it’s a step toward justice. It’s a way to move beyond acknowledgment and establish a new relationship with the land and Indigenous communities. Regular contributions create a legacy of healing and restoration for the region and its people.
